Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete Guide for Contractors
Step-by-step guide to ranking in the Google Maps "local pack." Most contractors miss 60% of these optimizations.
June 2026 · 9 min read
When a homeowner searches "roofer near me" or "painter in Worcester," Google shows a "local pack" — the top 3 businesses on a map, with reviews, photos, and a phone number. Getting into that top 3 is worth more than any ad you'll ever run.
The local pack gets 44% of all clicks on a search results page. If you're not in it, you're invisible to nearly half of your potential customers. Here's how to get there.
The 10-Point GMB Optimization Checklist
Complete Every Field
Business name, address, phone, website, hours, categories, service area, description — every single field Google offers. Incomplete profiles rank lower. Period.
Choose the Right Primary Category
This is the #1 ranking factor. Be specific: "Roofing Contractor" not "Contractor." You can add secondary categories (e.g., "Siding Contractor," "Gutter Service") but the primary category drives ranking.
Add Services (Not Just Categories)
In the "Services" section, list every service you offer: roof repair, roof replacement, gutter cleaning, skylight installation, etc. Each becomes a search trigger.
Upload 50+ Photos
Profiles with 50+ photos get 7x more clicks. Mix: exterior shots, before/after, team photos, trucks/equipment, completed projects. Add new photos weekly — Google favors active profiles.
Write a Keyword-Rich Description
750 characters. Include: your trade, service area towns, services offered, years in business, what makes you different. Example: "ABC Roofing has served Worcester, Shrewsbury, and Auburn for 15+ years. We specialize in residential roof repair, replacement, and storm damage restoration."
Get and Respond to Reviews
Quantity + recency + rating = ranking. Aim for 5+ new reviews per month. Respond to every review within 24 hours (including negative ones). Google measures engagement.
Post Weekly Updates
Google Posts are like mini social media updates that appear on your profile. Post once a week: completed projects, seasonal offers, before/after photos, team spotlights. Active profiles rank higher.
Add Products (If Applicable)
The Products section lets you showcase specific offerings with photos and prices. Use it: "Architectural Shingle Roof — Starting at $X/sq ft" — with a photo.
Enable Messaging
Turn on Google's messaging feature. Customers can text you directly from your profile. 60% of mobile users prefer messaging over calling. Reply within 24 hours or Google disables it.
Verify NAP Consistency
NAP = Name, Address, Phone. This must be identical across your GMB, website, Facebook, Yelp, HomeAdvisor, Angi, and every directory. Even minor differences ("St." vs "Street") hurt ranking.
Common Mistakes That Kill Rankings
- Using a PO Box or virtual address. Google requires a physical location where you serve customers. Service-area businesses can hide the address but must have a real one.
- Keyword stuffing the business name. "ABC Roofing — Best Roofer Worcester MA" violates guidelines. Use your legal business name.
- Duplicate profiles. If you have two GMB profiles for the same business, merge or delete one. Duplicates split your ranking power.
- Ignoring Q&A. Anyone can ask a question on your profile. Answer them. Better yet: seed your own Q&A with common questions.
